CLUBHOUSE - NOTES

How Are Journalists Adapting To Large-Scale Event Coverage?

Notes from a clubhouse conversation with Leigh Nordstrom, Michael Cuby, and Greg Galant.

Leigh Nordstrom, Eye Editor at Women's Wear Daily and Michael Cuby, Editor-at-Large at them. and Entertainment Writer at NYLON, joined Muck Rack CEO Greg Galant to discuss how journalists have adapted to large-scale virtual events, the challenges journalists have been faced with and their predictions for the future of event coverage in a post-pandemic world.

Our team attended and took notes. Here's what we learned:

How are news outlets assigning stories in the COVID-era?

• Reporters are still held to their original beats, if they can easily adapt to a digital or video-conference landscape, such as film festivals, panel discussions, etc.

• The virtual world has provided an easier transition to the “party world” like live events, fashion events, fundraisers, partnership launches, etc.

• Still, assignments remain on a case-by-case basis, for what deserves the most coverage

Can rapport be formed over virtual conversations rather than in person?

• In some cases, yes, because there is a lack of self-consciousness when meeting virtually.

• Remote and relaxed environments bring an ease with reporters. However, there is a need for physical presence and connectivity when reporters congregate with one another.
