Sesame Solar

VSC helped Sesame Solar decarbonize disaster response by introducing the world’s first mobile renewable Nanogrid.

The Story

Decarbonizing Disaster Response

Sesame Solar is decarbonizing disaster response and off-grid power with its Nanogrids that make renewable power fast and easy, leveraging solar power and green hydrogen to provide mobile, reliable and renewable energy wherever it is needed most. 560 catastrophic events are expected to happen every year by 2030. When disaster strikes, Sesame Solar Nanogrids bring power to impacted communities in a fast and fossil-fuel-free way to help them back the necessary actions for recovery.

We helped Sesame Solar emerge from stealth and launch Mobile Nanogrids as a renewable off-grid power source for disaster response, emergency communications, remote medical care, pop-up shelter and more.

Strategy and Tactics

We positioned Sesame Solar’s technology as the world’s first 100% renewable mobile Nanogrid. We focused on the ease-of-use, noting that you can simply “Open Sesame” by electronically unfolding the Nanogrid’s retractable solar array and the energy-independent solution inside is ready to use and starts generating power in just 15 minutes. Our rallying cry was to remove fossil fuel from disaster response, ending the cycle of responding to emergencies with the very thing that is exacerbating climate change-induced storms.

To introduce Sesame Solar to press, we invited select journalists to San Francisco to see the Nanogrid in-person and observe a demonstration of how it quickly and efficiently generates clean power. Journalists who were not able to travel to SF were sent a video of the demonstration that the VSC studio team produced.

Within the 6 months after Sesame Solar’s debut from stealth, we secured 45 stories including online stories, broadcast interviews, newsletters and podcasts resulting in 6.9B total impressions. Top stories included inclusions in CNBC, Forbes, Bloomberg and Fortune. We submitted the work to Fast Company and TIME Magazine and the company was named a TIME Best Invention of 2023 and one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies of 2023.

We also ran LinkedIn campaigns with the top stories, directly resulting in a deal with Santa Barbara County. The $2K spend on the campaign resulted in a 100x return on investment.
